M. Tech in Ocean Technology sponsored by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT)

M. Tech in Ocean Technology and Management is a full-time four semester program sponsored by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Ministry of Earth Sciences to meet the needs of trained manpower in various ocean technology related projects in India.

Students opting for this program should have background either in engineering or in science and they should be interested in a career in technology, business and management aspects of ocean engineering systems which include transportation, environmental management, resource development, mining, ports and harbours, public policy, maritime security and marine scientific research. Ocean Engineering activities require a multi disciplinary approach involving technical and administrative management of large and complex marine systems in coastal as well as deep ocean waters.

Towards this, in addition to technology, ideas about management principles, ocean policy and law find place in the specially tailored curriculum. An important component of this program is shipboard training designed to give the students a feel for the sea and an opportunity to conduct scientific research in sea.

Eligibility: Candidates should have first class or 60% (55% in case of SC/ST) in Bachelor’s degree in any branch of Engineering or Technology OR Master’s degree in Oceanography. Marine Sciences, Ocean Science and Technology, Applied Mathematics, Applied Geology, Geophysics, and Physics OR any other equivalent degree approved by the Advisory Committee with minimum 2 years experience in NIOT or in an organization approved by NIOT. Fresh candidates with GATE score may also apply for a few seats approved by NIOT.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATION SYSTEM FOR TISSUE CULTURE RAISED PLANTS(NCS-TCP)

Plant Tissue Culture Technology offers great promise for the production of quality planting material on account of disease free and true to type plants produced through micropropagation techniques. The need for a certification programme for the tissue culture plants is imperative since inadvertent micropropagation of virus infected plants will not only result in its poor performance, but also in undesirable spread of viruses wherever such plants are grown. Also, failure to use prescribed standard protocols will result in variations in the plants produced. The most deleterious variants in tissue culture raised plants are those that effect yield, genetic fidelity and carry infection of viruses, and other fastidious pathogens, which are difficult to diagnose. This is an area of great concern, and requires a well-structured system be put in place to provide support to the tissue culture industry for the commercialization of tested virus free and high quality planting material.

Ministry of Agriculture has vide Gazette of India Notification dated 10th March 2006 notified that “In exercise of the powers conferred under section 8 of the seeds Act, 1966 (54 of 1966), the Central Government hereby authorizes Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India to act as Certification Agency for the purpose for certification of the tissue culture-raised propagules up to laboratory level and to regulate its genetic fidelity as prescribed by them”. Accordingly a National Certification System for Tissue Culture Plants (NCS-TCP) has been developed.

This programme aims at creating trained human resource at the post-graduate level in general biotechnology, agriculture biotechnology, medical biotechnology, marine biotechnology, neurosciences, biochemical engineering and biotechnology. The following are the ongoing post-graduate biotechnology teaching courses :

• 27 M. Sc. Courses in General Biotechnology

• 7 M. Sc. Courses in Agriculture Biotechnology

• 1 M. Sc. Course in Medical Biotechnology

• 2 M. Sc. Courses in Marine Biotechnology

• 1 M. Sc. (3 years) in Neurosciences.

• 6 M. Tech Courses in Biochemical Engineering, Bio-process Technology and Bio-technology.

Under this programme Post Doctoral Fellowship of Rs. 11,000/- per PDF per month and contingency grant of Rs. 50,000/- per PDF per annum is provided for the period of 2 year.
